First Open day a success

On February 12th, HealthPost Nature Trust hosted their first ‘Open Day’ at the Wharariki Ecosanctuary. Not feared by the overcast clouds, and moderately strong easterly winds - over 75 people got to see the sanctuary from the inside, gaining new support and interest from the Mohua/Golden Bay Community.

One of 56 Pakahā/Fluttering Shearwater chicks from this years translocation

On tour, was the Flesh Footed Shearwater colony, and the mini Diving Petrel burrows. A ‘sneak-peak’ of whats to come. No Nelson Green Gecko’s were sighted on Sunday, despite several being counted only days before.

But of course - the star of the show was the Fluttering Shearwater chicks (aka Grey Fluff Balls), taking the stage. Members of the community were able to get up close & personal with the chicks - watching their journey from the burrows to the feeding shed.

The trust plans to make the Open Day an annual event, as more species make the Sanctuary home - and as the hundreds of plants grow. Hopefully in several years time, the Sanctuary will be blooming with life.
